Organization Description

Drishtee, founded by Ashoka Fellow Satyan Mishra, works with communities in rural India. These communities are today in a difficult situation as their sustainability is being challenged by growth of manufacturing and large scale industrialization. The situation has become more complex with the increase in cost of agriculture and poor land management. While we have some extreme cases of farmer suicides in some locations, most Indian villages are seeing a far lower growth than the average inflation in the country. Able bodied men are forced to migrate to cities in search of livelihood for their family back home. While they contribute to the astronomical growth of cities, by working night and day, they remain low in skills and therefore low in wages as well. Approach/Solution : Drishtee has identified 3 core pillars of sustainability: Livelihood, Services and Basic infrastructure. On these 3 pillars, rests the sustainability of any community wherever they may exist. If one of these 3 pillars goes weak, it impacts the very foundation of the community. Drishtee has worked in the first phase of its growth on the services pillar. It has provided education, health, availability of household products and banking services for the last 13 years in over 5000 villages. Over the last 2 years, it has started focusing on the livelihood pillar which is expected to impact the maximum. It expects to partner with the Government and other larger stakeholders, to build the infrastructure pillar. Sustainability of self contained communities is needed to build a strong world. For us at Drishtee sustainability means a world which is more equitable, open and which regards and respects the human civilization and it’s cradle. By ensuring sustainability of marginalized communities, we wish to create models of success which can be emulated the world over. With a little bit of support these communities can become role models for the future world. In them Drishtee sees a bright future for the world as a whole.

Opportunity Description

Drishtee envisions a world where all communities are empowered to achieve shared prosperity. Our mission is to engage and collaborate with marginalized communities to develop and nourish 500,000 livelihoods by 2020.

Towards this end, Drishtee is offering skills training to farmers and non-farmers in rural villages through which they can gain new livelihoods and incorporate best practices that will help ensure success. For farmers, this means they will learn to access soil analysis, quality seed, quality organic and inorganic fertilizers, methods of crop rotation, safe storage, credit and subsidies, savings plans, insurance support, and linkages to agro-based agencies. For non-farmers, they will learn the best methods in cattle, poultry and fishery management, along with learning about the production of creeper and other vegetables and floriculture.

We are looking for an entrepreneur to lead and scale this livelihood skills training model, which has the potential to dramatically improve the lives and farming practices of marginalised farmers in rural India. This is a fantastic opportunity to step into a growing and important enterprise and to use your passion and drive to ensure its success and eventually scale the model. With Drishtee’s international and national reputation behind you, your leadership and achievements will be well supported and recognized.

As our entrepreneur, you will be expected to volunteer for six months to learn the business, understand the local culture and to demonstrate your abilities and commitment. You will then be offered a stake in the company, and the investment of your volunteering will be offset by future revenues. Drishtee will help with a small monthly stipend and accommodations.

Opportunity Description

Drishtee envisions a world where all communities are empowered to achieve shared prosperity. Our mission is to engage and collaborate with marginalized communities to develop and nourish 500,000 livelihoods by 2020.

Towards this end, Drishtee has launched a new enterprise called Madhukrishi. Using vegetables as a means, Madhukrishi aims to connect urban women with landless women farmers. We believe in the idea of ‘shared prosperity’ – that both sides have a lot to offer each other in terms of culture, tradition, networks and resources. And we want to create a platform for this exchange to happen. Through our vegetable subscription model we hope to provide secure markets and investment support to landless farmers.

As daily consumers of vegetables, most of us are not aware of the journey that our vegetables take from the point it is plucked in the fields until it reaches our homes. During this journey, our vegetables will be handled at multiple stages, reducing the freshness and longevity of the produce. And still we are paying high prices for vegetables that have lost in part their nutritional value. On the other side of the coin, the farmers who have grown the produce are not receiving fair prices for their hard work. Both consumers and farmers are losing out in this unnecessarily complicated process.

That is where Madhukrishi comes in. We are a team that challenges the traditional supply chain model by better connecting the producer with the end consumer. The vegetables which we procure come directly from the farms; are fresh and will provide consumers with value and variety for money. We partner with marginal women farmers and offer them access to stable markets through constant demand, higher value for their produce and the convenience of collecting their vegetables from a designated point in their village. Their vegetables are brought directly to subscribers in the urban centers, who receive the vegetables fresh at their door.

We are working on building a robust supply chain and developing our marketing pitch to the customers and the farmers. The potential for scale is enormous. In the NCR region the demand for vegetable increases with the growth in population. Additionally the model is flexible to allow for alternative partnerships with school canteens, dhabas and restaurants.

We are looking for an entrepreneur to lead and scale this business model, which has the potential to dramatically improve the lives and farming practices of marginalised farmers in rural India while providing the urban consumer both with fresh produce and a direct connection to its source. This is a fantastic opportunity to step into a growing business and to use your passion and drive to ensure its success and eventually scale the model. With Drishtee’s international and national reputation behind you, your leadership and achievements will be supported and recognized.
